Welcome back to my second part in reviewing the iPhone. In this post we will be dealing with the video capabilities of the phone. With my last post I dealt with the still camera portion. You can view that HERE.
I love this phone. I have had cell phones for over a decade now, going on 13 years to be exact, back when only the so called drug dealers and pimps carried them. Anyways I still find it very hard to put down, it really is a small computer that fits in the palm of your hand.
I wanted to test the video in a multiple of ways. Mostly though I wanted to find its breaking point and how well it did under different lighting situations. This first test is a small video clip of my girlfriend complaining about how close I get with her to shoot with the iPhone(one of its draw backs is that you can’t zoom). This was shot using only a backlight used in the bathroom. The fill light is just spill bouncing off the white walls. When its quite, the audio is actually not to bad. See for yourself.
This second test is a clip of my cat Tuxedo. This was shot using daylight through open window blinds. Since there is no way to use a white balance feature, its auto balance changes throughout the clip. The auto focus can be quite unnerving at times. The image can become distorted when you move the camera while shooting, this will cause a huge focus problem. The touch screen focus is a cool feature, if it would worked. See my second clip of Tuxedo and you will see what I mean.
The third test is my outdoor test. You will see that I shot this in front of a local Best Buy. It was shot at approximately 3:30pm and the glare from the widow I think had a huge outcome on the quality of this shot. I think that the glare itself made the video more contrast then it should be. The color is a bit off as well, but overall outdoor, with lots of ambient light, it takes decent video.
This last test is just for fun, it was shot in low light so the quality is compromised. Never the less, its bouncing boobs shot from the iPhone.
Overall I think Apple has a long way to go with the video capabilities for their phone. A white balance and zooming feature would be a huge plus for possible upgrades or future models. With that said its actually very easy to use and can be really fun to annoy the girlfriend with. It is also something you can use on the fly for those candid moments.. With all that said it is still probably the best video camera on a cell phone I have ever used.
RATING 7/10
