Shooting at Lake Mead in the rain with Stephanie A. Cook.

The other day Stephanie had contacted me about doing some bikini shots out near some water. Unfortunately the only ready water near Las Vegas is Lake Mead, which at this point is pretty much just a large dirty puddle. I assured her we could still make it work and I headed over to pick her up. The other downside is that it was supposed to rain as well. We had an opening in the weather for the time being so we wanted to hurry before it rained. Well, that did not happen. As soon as we got to the Lake Mead Wash, found a spot, hiked to it and then set up, it decides to rain. Since Steph was in a skimpy bikini in 40 degree weather now with wind chill and rain, she was not a happy camper. After only firing a couple shots we packed up, hiked back up, got in the car and began looking for another spot hoping the rain would subdue.

These next two images were shot at the main beach for Lake Mead, right after you pay the park toll coming from Boulder City. These were taken on the concrete dock that had now been blocked off by a wall. I loved the ducks and birds in the background. I tried to incorporate as many of them as possible into my pictures in this spot. But for now I will show you one with and one without. Periodically at this location we would get a few fans standing around watching us.

These last set of photos were taken on a remote part of the wash near an abandoned boat dock. Since the rain had started coming down hard during this set it became out last. However we did get some great images and a little bit of video as well. A small Behind the scenes video if you will. Enjoy.

So the other day i found myself in one of my bored predicaments. I spent all day looking for a photoshoot to do and had been unsuccessful. Finally, my wish was granted. One of the BBW models I work with had dropped me a line to see what I was doing. When I told her i was having photography withdrawals she was more then happy to give me my fix. I grabbed my gear and headed over to her house to get to work. I was quite surprised we could get four sets it in just under an hour and half. Pretty sweet.

A couple days before I had broken my glasses so I had to ghetto-rig them for the time being until I could get a replacement. Since this happened my focus has been just a touch off. Just enough to royally piss me off, so every once in awhile I will fire a photo out of focus. Fortunately I was able to get this first set off without a hitch.

Candy shows us what gives her a sweet tooth.

My last post involved Kitty at an overpass here in Las Vegas. Well while I was photographing her, I was shooting another girl at the same location as well, and her name is Candy. Candy, just like Kitty was a blast to shoot. She was very nervous posing for me since this was her first photoshoot. Luckily I had Kitty with me who is good friends with her to help her feel more comfortable and at ease, which in return leads to better quality of pictures. Nobody likes to see frigidness and uptightness, especially in sexy photos.

The location was under an overpass that looked abandoned and lonely. Trash and blood littered every nook and cranny with the pungent oder of urine occasionally creeping into your nostrils. it felt like the location of a Fight Club scene. Wait did I just break the first two rules? Anyways, Candy was a ton of fun and great to shoot. I can’t wait to shoot her again. Due to the location and little kids walking into or photoshoot, it had to be cut short. The photos I did get were great. Oh and she did inform me, in case you were wondering, she has 22 tattoos and a ton of piercing as well. Also, since the other half of the tunnel had been occupied as well we didn’t get a good chance to explore and see what other parts of it would be cool to shoot at as well.

Kittie shows off for us under an overpass

So Kittie, her friend Candy and I decided to head out to go shoot some photos. Candy says she knows of a place and led the way to the location. Little to my knowledge that the location was the Lamb and Washington overpass here in Las Vegas, Nevada. It wasn’t a big deal, its just that you never see girls eager to be photographed with next to no clothing under an overpass. The location was about a quarter mile walk from where we parked. The little creek that trickled next to us as we walked was filled with flood flood runoff and sewer water, or at least thats what it smelled like.

We finally arrive! Once we got there though there were a couple kids goofing around and for some reason there were lots of small blood puddles around that look pretty fresh, only a few hours old, if that. So we walked around carefully. Once we found the spot we wanted to shoot at we got ready to shoot. To see Candy’s photos you will have to come back in a day or two for her post, but stay tuned. Kittie got dressed and we began to shoot.

Unfortunately we did not get to shoot that long because we were joined by more kids anxious and eager to stick their little noses in our business and see what we were doing. So we decided to pack it up and leave so we wouldn’t cause any more trouble then we needed. Since it was dark and a little chilly out plus I’m, I decided to use my sb600 bounce flash as a little fill instead of a tripod.

Last minute photoshoot with Roxy Rouge

The other day I had been sitting around the house bored and looking for anything to do. I had been spending the morning looking for a photo shoot but had been failing miserably. With no help in sight I had sent a message to one of my favorite models Roxy Rouge. Well, to my surprise she instantly replied and of course like always was very willing. I headed up to her place and started getting my equipment ready while she finished some last minute stuff with her costume. Her costume was an outfit she had designed herself for a burlesque performance a couple days earlier. Roxy already had a black sheet hanging around because of one of her boyfriends projects, so we decided to use it as a backdrop and began snapping away.

This first photo was an accidental fire and turned out to be one of my favorite shots of her I have ever taken. So even accidents can create something you really love.

So after we snapped a bunch of photos with that backdrop we decided we wanted to shoot one more set. We ran outside to see if we could salvage any light. At this point though it was already too late. So after we walked back upstairs and headed inside we decided to move her couch and a picture on the wall and start shooting with just a white wall. Once Roxy had changed and was ready to go we began shooting again. I will have to say that this is some of my favorite studios shots I have done yet.

Kari and I set out on a fun filled Sunday afternoon

The other day struck me with a serious case of boredom. So much so I had even asked my girlfriends 18 year old sister if she wanted to go shoot some pictures and knock out a couple senior pictures as well. Lets just face it, Kari can be a major pain in the ass, but fun. So when I asked her if she wanted to shoot I was surprised when she said yes. She quickly got ready and we headed out to this park I had only seen once before. But I knew it had some water and possibly some other cool things so that where we went. I don’t remember the name of the actual park. We set up near this little paddle boat dock and began snapping away photos.

After a quick wardrobe change we were back in action taking more photos. This time we had moved a little more north towards a closed clubhouse that was down for the winter, even though it was 70 degrees that day. Even though she was reluctant at first I still forced her to wear the sunglasses for a couple photos, which I thought was kind of a cool diva look even thought she is a small white girl.

Getting crazy in the snow with my better half.

18+ of age only.

Towards the end of January of 2010 Las Vegas had gotten hit hard by rain and harsh winds. Usually that means, more traffic and more accidents and it certainly brings out the asshole in the locals during crappy weather. Nevertheless, in the surrounding foot hills and mountain tops had gotten smothered in a blanket of fresh white powder. So after about 4 days of this weather we get a break and have a beautiful day and it happens to land on a saturday. Wanting to see the effects in the mountains we decided to pack it up and head up to Mt. Charleston. We soon found out that everyone else in Las Vegas had the same idea. We had gotten stuck several times due to congestion and traffic heading up the mountain. It eventually got so bad that the local police had to close down the road to visitors and tourists. The mountain had officially reached its maximum occupancy. This was a bummer. There were so many people here that we just could not get anywhere secluded to shoot some cool pictures.

Eventually we headed down the mountain and pulled off to the side of the road just to frolic in some snow. There I got a couple new photos of my girlfriend playing around. The mountain in the background gave a lot of shade. it gave the surrounding snow a very dark blue hue. Photoshop could easily correct this, but I actually like it.

Once we decided to leave we headed up towards Red Rock and the surrounding areas. HOLY SHIT! Everything is completely packed. Places and spots that usually never have anybody there are completely flooded. We kept cruising around trying to find a secluded area. We ended up at Bonnie Springs. We were there shooting for about 5 minutes when several other cars began pulling in and parking next to my vehicle. Very frustrating. We ended up leaving shortly after. Here are some of the photos from that set.

Kittie gets down and dirty on the mean streets of Las Vegas

Welcome back to part two of this post. This post is for people 18 years of age and older. If you haven’t read the first part you can check it out HERE. To bring you back up to speed, Kittie and I headed out to downtown Las Vegas to see what kind of photos we could come up with.

One of the places we photographed at was the train tracks behind the Can Can Room. We also shot directly behind the building as well as you will see later on in this post. We decided to get a little cliche and and shoot some train track photos. Some of the track photos were taken in Black and white. These first two photos are from this series, several others were shot in color.

Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1250)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 200

This next photo was fun too shoot. See that little blurry light in the background? Yup thats a train probably about a mile back.

Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 200 mm
ISO Speed: 200

After we were done shooting cliche stuff we decided to get a little naughty. Kittie quickly disrobed and we began shooting in the back parking lot of the Can Can Room building. For most of these I had been standing or sitting on the steps that you will be seeing Kittie sit and stand on in the last set of photos. We were at the location for a good 30 minutes without being disturbed at all.

These last group of photos were shot against the back wall of the Can Can Room(Las Vegas strip club) and a chinese laundry mat I believe. Either way it was a lot of fun to shoot here. The colors are a lot of fun too and can make a good contrast with just about any style. Check it out and see for yourself.

Kittie gets down and dirty on the mean streets of Las Vegas

A couple days ago, before the storms came flooding our city away, Kittie and I headed out to the downtown area to shoot some portfolio stuff for her. The atmosphere was wet and rainy, even though it didn’t start raining until later in the evening. If you are a photographer or filmmaker then you already know that overcast days can be a godsend to shooting outdoors. Why? Overcast creates a natural, soft and even lighting that eliminates strong shadows. The downside is that you typically don’t want to shoot the sky because it will come out an ugly grey. Not all the time, but a lot of it.

This first shot is one of, if not the favorite of mine in the set. It was a photo taken on the fly while Kittie crossed the street from an alleyway we had be scoping out. I did a little photoshop on this image. I desaturated most of the colors and upped the saturation a little on the magentas. That way it popped the pink a little more in the skirt. I also added a lot of contrast to the image and burned the edges of the photo. In the end it turned out to be a great fly on the wall photo.

Camera: Nikon D200
Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/640)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 24 mm
ISO Speed: 250

Our first photos were actually taken at this next location, an empty parking lot with a painted wall. We didn’t stay long at this location due to the fact that the homeless and local drug pushers kept crowding us. It was a fun location to shoot at but a bad part of town to be hanging out alone with what we were doing.

Camera: Nikon D200
Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/180)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 72 mm
ISO Speed: 100

Once we left that area we wandered around looking for something to shoot with. We drove past a small, empty construction area off Main St. As we drove past she told me out of the blue, “I love tractors so much.” Once she said that we just had to shoot there now. So we scoped out the area quickly and began shooting away. I got a lot of great shots from here, so here are two of them.

Camera: Nikon D200
Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 70 mm
ISO Speed: 100

Camera: Nikon D200
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 120 mm
ISO Speed: 100

Walking back from the tractors we came across this white wall that had a huge burn mark on it. When we took a closer look it looks as if a tree caught on fire which led to the look of the wall today. I’m not sure if the rusted out wall hydrant still works.

Camera: Nikon D200
Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 24 mm
ISO Speed: 100

Camera: Nikon D200
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 24 mm
ISO Speed: 100

These next four photos were taken across the street. The first one was shot in a random square hole in the side of a building downtown. I’m not sure what it does but it was an interesting place to take a couple quick pictures. Directly next to the hole was the chain link gate that we shot the next two photos. I really love the look of this alley and especially the fence. I wish I had put on the 200mm lens so I could get a better depth of field. They still came out great though. Se for yourself.

Camera: Nikon D200

A photo experience while driving down Highway 95

I recently took a trip through Nevada to travel to my home town of Washoe Valley, in between Carson City and Reno, for Christmas. To get there from Las Vegas it is pretty much a 500 mile straight shot up the Highway 95. This road can have a lot of side attractions that unfortunately many will not be able to bring to you in this post. Its far more to shoot in one quick trip.

I left on a friday morning at about 5:30am. Since my car didn’t have headlights at the time I wanted to leave early so I would arrive at my destination with light still available and still be able to shoot a little bit. This fist photo was shot at about 6:30am from the road while I was moving, I just pointed the camera out the window and this is what I got.

Our next stop takes us to a spot just south of Tonapah. This place was an entire abandoned community, including a gas station! There is a panoramic photo I am working on from this location as well. Anyways, this was the only photo that i converted into black and white. For some reason, to me, the message seams much louder and clearer in black and white. It has an almost post apocalyptic feel to it.

I knew when I hit Tonapah I wanted to get a couple photos of the Mizpah Hotel. Known for being a haunted house and in general, plain creepy. I really wanted to shoot the interior since in looked like it was still furnished and ad been sitting for 50 years. Maybe people are too afraid to clean it out, or maybe they are keeping it like that for the nostalgic feeling. I was lucky enough to photograph two haunted houses this trip. The old brick makes the sides of the building look like an old prison. It has a menacing demeanor about itself. The photos are desaturated slightly and shot with the sun directly behind the building. Don’t take my word for it though. Check it out for yourself.

If you are familiar with the highway then you know it runs directly through the largest military ammunitions depot in the country, possibly the world. This place is called Hawethorne. I actually wanted to shoot some photos of the town but there was so much heavy fog I could barley see 20 feet in front of me. This made for some dangerous driving and poor photographs, so I kept trucking on.

Just a few miles north of Hawthorne is a small community and beautiful lake called Walker. The dense for was still lurking around but was more off into the distance now. While driving I came across a boat landing that caught my eye and I instantly knew I wanted to take photos of it, I drove done the little road to a sign which told me that there were explosive devises all along the south shore and that the beach was closed. Bummer. I really wanted to take a picture of my RX-8 on the dock with the fog rolling in, but I couldn’t. This was the best I could do, and still an amazing image if you ask me.

Heading even deeper north you will come across a town called Yerington, a small community about an hour outside the states Capitol. As far as the excitement level going on in this town, its become virtually nill. At the outskirts of the town was something awesome I had came across. Ok, so its really been there for a long time, this was just the first time I could photograph it. I’m also glad I waited this long, the snow really helps with the atmosphere and feel. Here is the abandoned Yerington Drive-In Theater.

Once I got t the capitol Carson City I shot the old Stewart Indian Reservations with Skeever. It was so cold when we were shooting. It was about 13 degrees and slightly snowing. I couldn’t stay long since I had been ruined by the Las Vegas weather. Here is my only usable photo from that session.

The view from my moms house is quite epic. In fact she has one of the best views in the world in my opinion. The mountain is the slide side of Mount Rose, Lake Tahoe.

Also not far from my moms house is Washoe Lake. In fact its practically in her back yard. This next photo is another one of my self portraits. It was shot at the boat dock by the beach. I might make a new post of all my pictures from Washoe Lake.

These last two photos are of the haunted Bowers Mansion. Growing up I always loved seeing this place, and to capture it with a few feet of fresh snow in front of it made it instantly one of my favorite pictures I have shot yet. The second photo just had my RX-8 in front of it from a different angle. I hope you enjoy!
